Avoiding GMO foods is getting more and more difficult as Big Agri continues to take a bigger hold over all food – worldwide.

You might think that sticking to the produce aisle is safe, but even that is not entirely true.

Think for a minute. Seedless watermelon sounds like a great invention, doesn’t it? No pesky seeds, right?

I agree, that is a great benefit, but thats not why they really developed it. You see, without seeds, you cannot grow your own watermelon. You HAVE TO buy new seeds every year.

You may have heard of studies done in other countries that have banned GMO foods. Studies that show increased allergies, disease, and sterililty. But for some reason that is all ignored in the U.S. The govenment would let Big Agri run rampant if it weren’t for some activists getting the word out and rallying our voices to defeat this movement. When I, or they ask you to click your mouse and add your support – it is very important that you do.

So if other countries have banned GMOs, how is Big Agri taking over food worldwide?

Seeds, wind, and pollen don’t recognize borders. They happily blow around landing wherever they may. Mexico is fighting the infestation of their corn crops blowing across from the US. The really crazy thing is, once their crop is infected, Big Agri owns it. They hold the patent. Doesn’t matter that the farmers didn’t want the crop in the first place, or that it was banned. Its there to stay.

In the US, over 90% of all corn, soy, and sugar beets are GMO crops.

That means every food you buy that has corn, corn syrup, soy, soy protein, sugar, fructose, dextrose are from GMO crops. Only pure cane sugar is not from sugar beets.

OK, so you can just eat salad and meat, right?

If you are buying regular commercial meat, those animals have been fed GMO crops, growth hormones, and antibiotics. Chickens do not normally have bigger breasts than you. Its not natural. Companies have found ways to make animals bigger and do it faster and cheaper. Consumers happily buy the cheapest meats by the cartload.

Tyson, Perdue, and Smithfield are all known for unsavory practices.

The other problem with this is that it makes you overeat. Meat does provide important nutrients, but you only need a small amount. When you are presented with a huge chicken breast, or a 16 oz. beautiful juicy steak – what do you do? Most people will try their best to eat the whole thing. It took me a long time to break that habit.

As you saw with watermelon, your produce may be GMO too.

I’m starting to save seeds myself. The thing I don’t know at this point, since everything so so hybrid and disease resistant, whether these seeds will even grow, or whether we need to buy certified heritage seeds and start our own collections there.

My neighbor thinks these seeds are sterile. “They” want you to buy their seeds every year. Unless people start saving seeds on a large scale, it won’t be long before any heritage seeds will be gone. This will be an ongoing project for me to find out all I can about this for you. Stay tuned!

So, what can you do?

Really, unless you eat all organic, including your meat – you can’t avoid it all together. That would require you making all of your salad dressings, breads, and everything else. Most of us don’t have that kind of time.

Weigh how much risk you’re willing to take. While seedless watermelon and cucumber seem convenient, you know its not natural.

Buy the best you can afford, and stay away from packaged foods as much as possible.
