How to save on air conditioning

In typical Midwest style, we went from needing the heat one night to needing the air conditioning to be able to sleep a couple nights later. I swear, it was 88 degrees in the house at 10 pm before I broke down and turned on the air.

By the time July roles around, we’ll be better able to tolerate the heat, but boy that first blast is HOT!

Here are some tips to help you save on your air conditioning bills –

If you have overhead lights in your bedrooms, install ceiling fans. They will help keep you comfortable on all but the muggiest nights.

If you know it’s going to be super hot – when that sun starts coming around the front of the house, close it up, pull the blinds, and turn the air on low before it gets too hot in there. I find that most of hte time, I can open the house back up later in the evening and it will be comfortable as long as I don’t let it get super hot in the first place.

Put a fan in one window blowing out with the rest of the windows open. I know that makes no sense, but it works. It pulls the air through the house.

Don’t be in the house in the first place! We waited all winter for summer to get here. Go sit on a hammock and read. Jump in the lake or a pool. That’s what this weather is for!

Eat lots of salad and fruit – no cooking required! Cook your meat on the grill to keep from heating up the kitchen.

Shower before bed. You’ll be cooler, and feeling better – and your sheets will stay cleaner.

I think I’ll take hyper-dog down for a swim now…
