I think there are some common mis-conceptions about eating healthy.
A lot of people feel that if they can’t eat home grown, or organic, or grass fed, or weird sounding foods that you can only find at a health food store, that you can’t be eating healthy.
Now, while it may be true that these foods are better for you than the mainstream stuff you buy in the grocery store, it doesn’t mean that you can’t improve your health by eating a good balance of foods – even from the grocery store.
5 – 7 servings of fruits and vegetables, even from the main aisles of the grocery store are better than the 1 or 2, or none- that you are eating now. Even frozen fruits and vegetables and juices are nutritious as long as you watch what else they are packaged with. You certainly don’t want to be drinking ‘juice’ that has corn syrup listed as one of the main ingredients.
And this is the greatest time of the year for fresh fruits and vegetables. Farmer’s markets and roadside stands are starting to show a lot of good stuff! This is the best time of year to kick your healthy eating habits into gear.
And don’t forget that you can freeze a lot of the seasons treasures!
In time, as we grow into better eating habits, we can move towards better foods. But for now, just get started.
And take a good multi-vitamin to make up for the nutrients that might be missed because we’re eating mainstream instead of organic.
Hey, we gotta take baby steps, right?
