It’s the time of year when people are starting to think about winterizing.
- Check furnace & filter
- Check windows for drafts, caulk…
- Check tires, oil, fluids…
- Prune plants, clean up leaves…
- Check and launder winter clothes & blankets
But what about winterizing your body?
This is the time when you should be focusing on building your immune system so you can hopefully get through winter without getting sick.
This is the perfect time of year to load up on fruits and vegetables while they are still in season. You might even want to do some freezer preserving so you can have fresh vegetables on hand well into the winter.
It is really important to build your nutrient storehouse. Try to get your 5-9 servings of vegetables and fruits everyday. I know a big salad gets me 2 – 3 servings, usually some combination of dark leaf lettuce, or spinach, broccoli, carrots, tomato, and/or onion -so we do a salad a lot of the time. I can get another 1 or 2 in with certain kinds of juices. Add a vegetable side at dinner, and a snack of fruit during the day and you are at least at the minimum.
Foods to build your immune system
Take your vitamins!
We used to think that winter was cold and flu season because its cold. Now they find that it has more to do with lower vitamin D levels. Less sun exposure, less vitamin D. For now, I am making a point to get at least 20 minutes of sun exposure a day while the weather is still warm. Once it gets cool, its time to start supplementing. If you don’t get much sun exposure, start supplementing now!
Other immune building nutrients include Antioxidants – C, E, and Zinc.
ZZZZs – its not a luxury
One of the most important things you can do for your health, performance, mental clarity and mood is to get enough sleep. People treat sleep like its a luxury, but it really is a necessity. You need to make this a priority.
I know for me, my perfect amount of sleep is 7 hours. Any less than 6 1/2 and I know I won’t have the energy I need to do all the things I need to get done in a day.
Turn the TV off and get the sleep you need.
You know, people take better care of their cars than they do their bodies. It’s a shame, isn’t it?
