Did you know that ducks eat acorns?

English: Birds, Duck

This may seem like a silly story. No, I take that back, it is a silly story –

It all started out as a joke.

My neighbor likes to feed birds. He is full of information on animals, gardening, cooking, …

He was in my yard and saw how many acorns had fallen. He said that he was going to save the acorns to feed the squirrels over the winter. He then went on to talk about how Indians used to make flour from acorns. So I figured I would pick up a couple of buckets full and put on his patio as a joke.

As I was picking up acorns, It struck me how much food this is that just gets sucked up by the lawnmower and disposed of. That seems sad, doesn’t it? Yes, I am that weird.

Picking up acorns is a lot of work. So I just stared throwing them in flower beds so they would be out of the way of the lawnmower. I figured the squirrels could help themselves from there.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that I have ducks that hang around. My dog doesn’t bother them, and I guess they feel safe here. I don’t really know. It is strange. But I was not prepared for what happened next.

My yard is being ravaged by ducks!

My expert on animal behavior neighbor asked me if ducks eat acorns. I had no idea. I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’ve had as many as 30 ducks in my yard at one time.

Turns out that ducks love acorns. Why I haven’t seen this phenomenon before is a mystery to me.

Do you have any strange animal stories?
