Killer Tomatoes Back in Hiding

Posted under Recalls & Warnings

Wow, over 383 people in 30 states have gotten sick from the latest tomato samonella outbreak – since April.

Why is it that tomatoes weren’t pulled until June? And they’re saying they may never be able to track down the exact cause. How comforting.

Major fast food chains have started putting tomatoes back on their burgers. I had to laugh at the comments posted here- (opens in a new window)

All in all, at this point you can probably feel pretty safe eating tomatoes. Especially if you stick to ‘on the vine’. But for me – I think I’ll stick to farmers markets. There’s lots of beautiful great tasting stuff out there right now. Why buy the inferior grocery stuff anyway?

Next time you’re about to drive past that vegetable stand – pull in. There’s great stuff waiting for you there.

To Great Summer Eating!

Killer Tomatoes – Again?

Posted under Recalls & Warnings

There is yet another salmonella scare. People in 9 states have fallen ill. I don’t think anyone has died – but salmonella is not fun.

Basically, you’ll spend your life for about 7 days, laying on the couch and running to the bathroom You’ll have cramps. You’ll be weak. I mean really weak. Yes, I speak from experience – and it’s not an experience I’d like to repeat.

This new outbreak is tied to raw large tomatoes – including Roma and red round tomatoes – were found to be a common factor in the 40 illnesses. But no farm, distributor or grocery chain has been identified as the main source yet.

It’s fairly easy to avoid these kinds of risks – especially this time of year. You can grow your own, or buy from local farmers.

Not only will they taste 200% better, but they’re healthier, and you support your local economy.

In any event, stay away from the types listed. Roma tomatoes have been in abundance in the grocery store, and cheap – so I imagine a lot of people have them in their house right now.

I was going to buy some yesterday as a matter of fact, but a little voice in my head said, “get your butt over to the farmstand.” So I didn’t buy them. I haven’t made it to the farmstand yet either, but this certainly is another incentive, isn’t it?

Stay Healthy!

Return of the Killer Tomatoes

Posted under Recalls & Warnings

Once the subject of a b-rate horror spoof movie, now
appearing on a salad plate in a restaurant near you.
Another healthy food gone bad -

Oh wait – that was back in September. It’s long over
now. Why are we seeing this story now? Slow news
weekend or what?

It’s not like we don’t have enough problems getting
people to eat right, but we need to throw in some
sensationalized press to really stir people up.

But the health problems associated with soy? Oh no-
we won’t hear about that. And why?

It’s a big industry.

If you think the food industry is really looking
out for your health when they come out with these
fantastic new, healthier products, don’t believe
it. They’re just trying to keep you comfortable
so you’ll keep spending money on their products.
I don’t believe lab food is healthy. Just my
opinion. What’s yours? I saw someone call
them Frankenfoods. Isn’t that funny?

But these foods won’t jump out of your drain
and suck your blood. They will be much more
insidious – killing you slowly from the inside
out. Real life can be much more horrifying than
movies. Ask anyone with Cancer.

And mutant tomatoes? May not be that far fetched
with all this genetic engineering.

But for today – tomatoes and spinach are safe.

Take care of yourself! No one else will.

Have a great day. Talk to you soon.
