Tim Russert’s Controversial Death

Tim Russert’s death has caused a lot of controversy in the health fields. He was taking all of the drugs that were supposed to keep him healthy, and getting exercise, and doing all of the things Doctors told him to do.

2 things were missed. His homocysteine levels were high, and his magnesium was low.

Unfortunately, Doctors do not recognize nutrition as the cornerstone of your health. Maybe they finally will pay more attention now. Sometimes media coverage is good for something.

How do you keep your homosysteine levels low? B vitamins.

After my magnesium fiasco, you might be reluctant to take magnesium, but as I said in the post – I already got a lot of magnesium before I started messing with the liquid stuff. I eat meat and leafy greens. I take a good multi, and I take a calcium supplement with magnesium and D (which is another important nutrient that most people are deficient in.) And I drink coffee.

So while I get plenty – MOST people do not.

It’s really important that you understand how to get all of your essential nutrients every day. That’s why I wrote High Energy Eating for you.

It’s really hard to cut through all of the conflicting information coming at you every day about health and nutrition. But you know what? A healthy diet never really changes. Ignore all of the fads and eat a plain old healthy balanced diet.

If you don’t know how to eat a healthy balanced diet, or how to make sure you’re getting the nutrients you need every day – pick up a copy of High Energy Eating. You’ll be happy you did.

Eat This and Mutate

Franken Foods have taken an even more diabolical turn. I feel like I’m living in a sci-fi movie!

A new disease – Magellan’s disease – is spreading. It’s a disease that causes people to break out in sores where red and blue plastic looking fibers come out. I’ve heard of it before, but it was still a mystery. Recent research uncovers some horrifying questions.

Are the foods that are on the grocery store shelves causing mutations?

Are you concerned about the food you’re feeding your family? You should be. Take a break and visit this site –

If you’re short on time – scroll down and read the article. Do it now. You can go back and watch the documentary when you have some time. You may not be willing to change how you eat yet, but you can at least be informed.

I think this is all really scary, don’t you?

Health, Fitness, and Happiness

Are you healthy? If not, chances are you’re not very happy.

You might think you’re happy enough. You might be perfectly satisfied with putting in a good days work 5 days a week and being too tired to do much else, other than plop in front of the TV during your spare time. A lot of people are satisfied with that way of life. I don’t know if that’s the same as happy, but they’re comfortable enough to not want to change.

Then there are the people who would like to be healthier, but never actually do anything about it. They’re not happy, but they’re not motivated enough to change – yet.

If you’re hanging on to your unhealthy ways because you think it’s not worth the sacrifice – you’ve been misinformed.

Here’s just a few of the benefits to getting healthy –

You’ll have more self-confidence.

You’ll have more energy to do the things you want to do – whether it’ play with your kids or grandkids, or take up a new hobby, or start a business, or travel, or whatever…

You’ll look great – and you’ll be a whole lot happier when you look in the mirror.

You’ll raise healthier, happier kids.

You won’t get sick often.

You won’t be as depressed.

You’ll think more clearly.

You’ll get more done.

You won’t be spending a lot of money on prescriptions and medical care.

You’ll sleep better and be more rested when you get up.

You’ll be eating food that tastes like food – not chemicals.

You’ll laugh at how old some of your friends look – even though they’re the same age.

You’ll wonder why your kids can’t keep up with you.

You’ll be more likely to try new things.

I mean, think about healthy people that you know. Aren’t they more active, and happier than you are? Wouldn’t you like to have a little bit of what they have?

Take a few small steps this weekend.

Buy some fresh fruits and vegetables – and eat them.

Buy some vitamins.

Take a walk. If it’s too cold outside – you can walk in the mall, or dance, or clean house, or go bowling, or pick up a beginners book on yoga, or pilates, or tai-chi. Or use resistance bands like I do.

Take those first few small steps and see if you don’t get motivated to do more.

And if you start right now, you’ll be looking pretty good by the time you have to break out the shorts and bathing suits – but you’d better hurry up ;-)

Won’t that make you a lot happier?

Can how you eat really make you happier?

Ready to Show Some Healthy Skin?

Did you put on a pair of shorts yet? Did your skin look like You should be shedding soon? And how about those feet?

To start getting that skin ready for springtime exposure-

* Exfoliate using scrubbing grains, a loofa sponge – etc. Not too rough though!

* Use a pumice stone to smooth off your feet

* Use a fingernail brush and a moisturizing body wash to start wearing away the cuticle build-up on your toe nails.

* Use a good moisturizer on your face.
* Slather your body with a good lotion like Jergens Ultra-Healing or Curel Age Defying Every Time you get out of the shower. Don’t forget to pamper your feet!

* Get enough sleep.
* Eat your fruits and veggies- get plenty of colors!

I am hearing that you should get 15 minutes of unprotected sunlight every day. We are not getting enough vitamin D and it’s causing a lot of health problems. But only 15 minutes without protection. Never long enough to burn.

Sale Paper Menu Planning

A lot of people complain that eating healthy is too expensive. It’s not when you know some secrets…

Of course I’m going to tell you. Hold your horses already!

One thing you may not know about me is that I’m cheap. I don’t like spending more money than I have to.

On the other hand, I don’t buy garbage usually either. At least, not on purpose ;-)

No matter what my financial condition has been, we’ve always been able to eat well. It’s no secret that I totally dislike most packaged foods. They taste bad. Not to mention that they’re bad for you.

Call me a food snob – but we don’t eat food that tastes bad. Why should we? There’s a lot of ‘foods’ that other people eat regularly that you will NEVER find in my house. ICK, ICK, ICK.

So, how can you eat real food for less money than garbage food?

Become a loss leader shopper. You know – all those great bargains that they use to lure you into the store, knowing that you’ll spend a lot more on other stuff? Except, you’re not going to spend money on the other stuff. You’re going to plan your menus using only what’s on sale.

The other great thing about shopping this way is that there is always something different on sale. You’ll have new menus all of the time!

I’ll take the sale paper from a smaller grocery store in the area since that will more closely match stores in any area of the US.

OK, so – this week we have Americas cut pork chops for $1.89 a pound. Cheap!

A pound of tail on shrimp for $4.99 – that’s a good one too! Shrimp scampi? Yum! Of course, we’ve been known to just pig out on the shrimp with a big salad.

A whole watermelon for $2.99. Early, but for that price, I’ll get one.

Eggs, 99 cents. Can you believe the price of eggs lately? Sheesh.

I only eat organic chicken now – so I skip those sales – but there is a family pack of split chicken breasts for 99 cents a pound. It really only takes a couple minutes to cut it off the bone and skin it.

Lean ground beef for 2.49 a pound? I wonder about that one. I only buy 90 or 95%.

Angus sirloin for 3.99 a pound. That’s good. Throw it in marinade before work and it will be a great fast dinner.

And I always keep spaghetti fixings in the house in case of emergency. No jars! ICK!

And there’s at least one night a week that we don’t eat at home. Either we eat at a friend’s, or go out, or get a pizza and watch a movie.

On to the veggies and stuff!

Red and green bell peppers – 79 cents a pound. That will go good with the marinated steak.

Tomatoes, 99 cents a pound. Always need those.

Ohhh, zucchini. I can make chicken with zucchini and tomatoes. Love that!

Coleslaw – I can make that coleslaw with the pineapple for a change. And pineapple is on sale too. Cool.

Sweet potatoes and baking potatoes are both on sale. I like sweet potatoes with pork chops. Cooked apples too – and there are apples on sale too.

Plus we’ll have pineapple and watermelon and apples for snacking. Oranges are pretty cheap too – $1.99 for 4 lbs. So are baby carrots – $1 lb.

A bag of spinach for salad – $1.50. Onions are always cheap.

OK, that’s enough already!

That’s how it’s done. Of course, it helps if you have my cookbook too ;-)

(You can either get the cookbook by itself here – or, you can get it as part of the whole High Energy Eating Package.)

Have fun with your healthy meal planning!

I’m hungry now…

Carole
