Top 10 Dieting Mistakes

Feet on a scaleImage via Wikipedia

If you plan to try to lose weight this year, there are 10 things that can derail your results. Avoiding these mistakes will help you lose weight safely, and keep it off for life.

1. The number one mistake is Dieting. Believing that you need some magic diet, plan, pill, or weird foods to lose weight. Starving yourself, depriving yourself – none of that works. You can lose weight easily when you learn how to eat right.

2. Falling for dangerous fad diets that cause sometimes long term health problems, or relying on “diet” foods that are full of corn syrup. Read those labels!

3. Not eating enough. Many people pride themselves on not eating a day, and then stuffing themselves silly at the evening meal because – ‘they haven’t eaten all day.’ First, your body has a natural protection mechanism to keep from starving. If enough food is not coming in, this defense mechanism kicks in building up fat for you to live on. The second problem is taking in all of your calories when you are least likely to do much to burn them off. You need to eat 3 meals, and 2 snacks a day to keep your metabolism burning.

4. Not taking enough time to relax, which results in stress eating. Stress also affects how your body works.

5. Not drinking enough water to keep your system flushed, and organs and skin hydrated. Think of a dry sponge. It doesn’t work very well. That’s what you’re doing to your body when you don’t drink enough water.

6. Not eating enough protein to build muscle instead of fat.

7. Not eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day to give your body the super powers it needs to make you look and feel great. Even if you change nothing else about the way you eat, and just add more fruits and vegetables, you will see improvement in the way you look and feel – and you will lose a couple of pounds.

8. Not getting enough sleep to let your body repair itself. What happens when you’re tired? Your body craves more sugar for energy.

9. Not getting enough exercise to keep all those joints and muscles working smoothly (heart and lungs are muscles too) and keep your metabolism burning.

10. Filling up on foods with no vitamins. You’ll always be tired and hungry until you give your body what it’s asking for. Eat some fresh fruits or vegetables with every meal and you’ll cut your cravings.

A Thin & Healthy Perspective

Grocery shoppingImage by ralphbijker via Flickr

Since losing weight is a big resolution on many peoples list, year after year… I’m going to spend some time giviing you some easy to apply tips that will help you be thinner and healthier this year.

If you truly want to be thinner, healthier, happier, and full of energy this year – you are going to have to change some habits.

Sorry, there is no way around this – no matter what the latest greatest new TV ad is trying to sell you.

But many times habits are formed by a wrong perspective. Here’s an example –

Many people will grab an “instant” dinner.

You cook the meat and drain it.
You add water and the magic ingredients.
Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
Lower heat, cover and simmer.
Come back, uncover, stir and let sit until it coagulates – ooops, I mean – thickens.
Eat
Feel drained

Now you might think that’s easy.

You might even think it tastes good (if the chemicals have killed off your tastebuds)

I’m surprised at how many people won’t even make a salad or a vegetable to go with these ‘meals’. They’re happy to eat a concoction of corn syrup, chemicals, sodium, and fats without a bit of nutrition. And then – those are the people complaining

They’re fat
Their joints hurt
They have high blood pressure
They have asthma
They have no motivation
And on, and on, and on…

Now to me – making those ‘meals’ is a pain in the butt.

It tastes bad.

It makes me feel bad.

In the same amount of time, I can put together a delicious fresh meal that will taste good, keep me young and healthy, and give me energy to live the other part of my life. You know – the hours after work when most people are too drained to do anything.

You can take 5 minutes to cut up some vegetables, or mix a chemical concoction. Same time, different choice, different outcome.

Just a different perspective.

I choose to eat foods that will keep me healthy, and I’ve found easy ways to do that.

Others choose to eat things that they perceive are easy to make, choosing to eat foods that most likely will give them heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Oh, I know – no one consciously thinks, “Oh, I think I’ll eat foods that will give me heart disease or cancer today.” But that’s the outcome.

If you could just make that one little change in your perspective – you’ll be halfway there. It’s really as simple as that.

Instead of making a resolution to lose weight, like you have every year – make an affirmation –

I choose to eat fresh foods that taste great and will keep me thinner, healthier, happier, and full of energy to live my life to the fullest.

Feel the difference?

After a couple of weeks – you really will feel the difference ;-)

Easing Your Thanksgiving Dinner Guilt

For weeks I hear people moaning about how bad the Thanksgiving Day Dinner is. I say – Hogwash!

When the foods are prepared fresh, this is a power packed meal filled with nutrients!

You’ll find – ALA, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, D, E, K, B vitamins, beta-carotene, calcium, carotenoids, fiber, folic acid, folate, ferulic acid, iron, magnesium, niacin, protein, potassium, phosphorus, phytochemicals, flavonoids, LArginine, indole-3-carbinol, isothiocynanates, Lutein, oleic acid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), resveratol, riboflavin, saponins, Selenium, sulforaphane, theophylline, thiamin, and zinc.

So as you’re mapping out your plan of attack, look for these healthy foods –

Almonds
Apples
Blueberries
Broccoli
Carrots
Chocolate
Cinnamon
Coffee
Corn
Cranberries
Green Beans
Lemon
Nutmeg Olives
Olive Oil
Onions
Parsley
Pickles
Potatoes
Pumpkin
Raspberries
Sage
Strawberries
Sweet Potato
Tea
Turkey
Walnuts
Wine

They all have health benefits, from preventing heart disease to fighting cancer, or just stopping a cold! There’s something for every inch of your body in this one meal.

You didn’t know healthy eating was so great, did you? You can stuff your family full of vitamins and they won’t suspect a thing!

And while it’s true that this meal contains a whole day’s worth of calories, you don’t want to show up with a sluggish metabolism. Eat breakfast and at least a healthy snack earlier in the day.

Eat smart. Load up on the goodies you don’t normally get. Skip things like bread and mashed potatoes.

Start with just a spoonful of everything. You’ll be amazed at how fast that plate fills up. If you have seconds, make it just a small bit more of your absolute favorites.

Talk a lot. The longer you take to eat, the fuller you’ll feel. Relax and enjoy yourself.

Have a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving!

Carole

Another Absurd Medical Statement

This study was posted in the US Journal Pediatrics on Monday that showed that medications for five to 19 year-olds have increased at an alarming rate. Between 2002 and 2005 -

Medication for type 2 diabetes increased by 103 percent

Prescriptions for asthma increased 46.5 percent

Prescriptions for attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity leapt 40 percent and were three times more prevalent among boys than girls.

Cholesterol treatments rose 15 percent.

For 5 to 19 year olds!

Now this is a laugh – the article goes on to say this –

“Additional study is needed into the factors influencing these trends, including growth in chronic disease risk factors, greater awareness and greater affinity towards early use of drug therapy in children,” it said.

Give me a break.

Of course the real answer is quit feeding kids diets of fast foods, packaged foods, and 50 gallons of corn syrup a day and give them some real nutrition so they can grow up big and strong. But medical science can’t seem to figure that out? What’s wrong with this picture?

Anyway, you can read the whole article here –

Buzz it up. Somehow people have to get the message that their diet is killing not only them, but their kids too.

Take Care –

The Diet Secret No One is Talking About

It will help you drop weight effortlessly, lower your blood pressure, prevent disease, give you tons of energy, and keep you looking great for years. What is it?

The Dark Side of Diet Denial

You may have seen a comment posted by my sister saying she was the one who had fallen off the wagon. But it may have been confusing because the article she is referring to was not on this blog. So just to clear up the confusion – here is the (updated) article that she was referring to.

No subject in the world has more bull attached to it than “diet”

From the awful tasting fake junk passing as food – that’s killing people

To the commercial deceptions claiming that these garbage foods are healthy

To doctors who know next to nothing about nutrition or natural healing because all they’re trained in is drugs and surgery.

To government agencies who treat healthy diet advice and supplements as quackery

To unscrupulous companies who are willing to sell you diet after diet that won’t work –

But That’s Not The Worst Bull

Oh, No. The worst bull comes from the people themselves. The people who know they could be thinner and healthier, but choose to stay trapped in the system. Let me give you a good example – my sister.

My sister has always pretty much refused to eat right. And she’s always been overweight and sick.

OK, I admit it. I am the weirdo in the family. I’ve never really been sick except for pretty extreme sinus problems as a child, and a couple bouts of pneumonia. I’ve never been in the hospital except for childbirth. I take no meds. I’m 52 years old. And I sailed through menopause without a problem.

I’m also the only one in the family that eats the way I do. Could there be a connection here?

Anyway, back to my sister.  She has been struggling with all sorts of joint problems and pretty chronic sinus problems. She actually had started following my plan – but fell back into her old eating habits.

In a recent conversation, she told me about all of the trips she has made to various doctors lately. I asked if she had been eating her fruits and vegetables. “Well, no, I get lazy.”

I asked if she’s been at least taking her vitamins. “No, I have to get more disciplined about that.”

I said, “You mean to tell me that you would rather spend all this time and money and frustration running around to all these doctors rather than spending a few minutes a day to eat right and take your vitamins?”

She says, “I know, I know…”

Or, there’s another girl. She exclaimed, “Carole, you’ll be really proud of me! I ate a salad yesterday!”

I said, “that’s great. What about today?”

“Well…”

Or my friend’s sister-in-law who just had a stroke. She’s had multiple heart attacks already. She’s only 45 or so. Has diabetes, high blood pressure, and is big.

My friend commented that Mary had said that she was controlling her diabetes. Beckie said, “If she was controlling it, she’d be losing weight. I’m controlling it, and I’m losing weight.”

I had to laugh. Beckie told me the same lies for years. Welcome back from the Dark Side Beckie!

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH PEOPLE?

I don’t get it. I really don’t.

Now, if you would really like to lose weight and take back your health – I can show you how. BUT, I cannot come to your house and force feed you.

If you would rather spend your time making trips to the doctor, and your money on drugs and tests instead of eating fresh great tasting healthy meals – then nothing will work for you. That’s the simple truth. As long as you insist on eating packaged and fast foods and not getting any nutrition – you will be overweight and sick. I guarantee it.

So will your kids.

I’d rather spend my money living life instead of on costly drugs. I need to have tons of energy to live my very full and busy life, I sure don’t have time to be sick. And I sure don’t want my daughter to suffer with medical problems if I can help it.

Listen, It isn’t hard to eat healthy. You can whip up fresh, great tasting, healthy meals in no time.

It doesn’t cost more to eat healthy.

You don’t have to suffer through a bunch of weird foods or do your shopping at the health food store.

That’s all just commercial brainwashing to convince you that you can never do it on your own. But if you’re still reading this page, I’m convinced that you actually have a brain and if given the right information – you can get back to a thin healthy body in a short amount of time.

But you have to be willing to actually make the change. No one can do that for you. We look forward to welcoming you back from the Dark Side!
