Imagine Living a Life Without Fear

Kiss in Sa PaImage via Wikipedia

Fear can be a powerful influence in your life, often determining the actions you take or don’t take in many situations. At various times fear has probably stopped you from pursuing goals, making new friends, starting or keeping a romantic relationship, applying for a better job, starting your own business, or life changes that you would consider to be positive.

Can you imagine what it would be like to live your life without fear? Obviously you can’t eliminate fear altogether, nor would you want to. Some fears help keep you safe by discouraging you from jumping off a cliff or stepping into a line of fast-moving traffic. But the other kind of fears; the ones that prevent you from living the life of your dreams – how would it feel to release those once and for all?

For example:

Imagine if you had absolutely no fear of failure and you knew that you could accomplish anything you wanted – no limitations whatsoever. What would you do with your life? Would you change careers? Would you go back to school? Would you write that novel?

Imagine if you knew without a doubt that you deserved to have everything you want, and you had no doubts that you weren’t good enough or worthy enough. Would you finally allow yourself to get out and meet that special someone, fall in love and live happily ever after? Would you terminate the unhealthy relationships that are no longer serving you and haven’t been for years?

Imagine if you were no longer afraid to pursue your dreams and instead eagerly embraced opportunities to live every experience you wanted to live. What would you do if you could do anything at all?

You may be thinking “It’s great to imagine all this but I still feel fearful much of the time. I’m still afraid to fail. I’m still afraid to be rejected. I’m still afraid to take a chance. How do I get past those scary feelings?”

First of all, forgive yourself for being human. It’s completely natural to have these feelings, and there is nothing wrong with you – your body is wired to react strongly to potentially threatening situations. Your body can’t tell whether the threatening situation is truly harmful or not; it simply gives you the warning signs like a pounding heart, sweaty palms, shallow breathing, tightening muscles, and so on. Fear can be pretty darn intimidating – no doubt about it!

However, it’s important to understand that fear is just a feeling when it comes right down to it. It can’t physically hold you back from doing anything, and it can’t limit your potential unless you allow it to do so. Overcoming the influence of fear so you can live an amazing life is a simple matter of knowing how to diffuse the fearful feelings in the heat of the moment. This can be done in a variety of ways, including the use of calming affirmations, meditation, and breath work. When you calm the thoughts that are triggering the fear response, your body will automatically calm down too.

Start a Little Spring Fever

We’re about to enter a season of rebirth. The flowers and trees come back from the dead. Help your spirit start rising from the dead now. Pretend you’re a little crocus bulb trying to push your flower out to the surface. Claw your way out if you have to. There are little things you can do to help your spirit now –

If your home is chaotic – clean it up. It feels so much better!

If you’re feeling bad about your body – start eating healthier – cut out packaged and fast foods, eat more fruits and vegetables, and get some exercise. You’ll start seeing and feeling results quickly.

If you seem to never have enough time-

Use a daily ‘to-do’ list to keep you organized, and if you have an errand or something that needs to be done, just do it – whether you ‘feel’ like it or not – so it’s not hanging over your head making you feel even worse.

Once you get a handle on the little things, you’ll find more time, energy, and motivation to start working on the big things. It’s not rocket science. It costs you nothing to try these few simple things and see if they don’t produce unexpected results.

Start a little of your own spring fever now. Start getting the house ‘spring-cleaned’. Start getting your body back in shape now. Then when the weather finally does break, the house will be clean, you’ll look great, and you’ll have plenty of energy to get outside and enjoy the warm weather!

If you’re a gardener, order some seeds or plants. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get out and start digging and creating!

You can speed up spring a little by painting a room a sunny color, or buying some colorful throw pillows, or putting together a silk flower arrangement.

Start pulling out your spring clothes and getting them ready to wear.

Start getting your feet ready for exposure. Have you looked at your feet lately?

There’s a bunch of things you can do in anticipation of spring!

Did you notice how many times I used the word ‘Start”? That’s half the battle – Start!

You can do anything you put your mind to.

Be great.

You can lead a horse to water…

I was talking to a customer the other day. She needed to get a new suit for an
upcoming interview. But, she wasn’t too excited about the interview. And the reason she needed a new suit? She’s gained quite a bit of weight.

She owns the High Energy Eating package.
She’s downloaded it – months ago.

I was really upset. How could that be?

I started shooting off the questions -

Are you eating fruits and vegetables?

Just what are you eating?

Sigh…

She started off by saying “Well, I really don’t eat much at all.” OK, mistake number 1.

Carbs in the morning – which is ok if you add some fruit. You’ll burn them off.

Sandwich and chips for lunch. More carbs, with a little protein and maybe some lettuce and tomato.

Breakfast food for dinner. More carbs and fat. Guaranteed way to gain weight. The carbs won’t be converted to energy because she won’t be doing anything to burn them off, so they will be stored as fat to use later.

Now that would be great if we had more money than we were going to burn, wouldn’t it?

I felt really bad for her. She is so depressed. Not just about the weight gain, but just in general. But it’s because she’s not getting the nutrients she needs for her brain and nervous system to operate right. That’s right, even depression is caused in part by a poor diet.

I can preach. I can give information. But I can’t come over and stuff healthy food down your throat. You have no idea how much I wish I could. I just want to shake people and yell, “look at what you’re doing to yourself!”

I care too much. I have that Pollyanna wish that everyone would be healthy and happy. But, I have to accept that you can only help people who are ready to be helped.

Writers often hope to change the world. The reality is, if we can touch a few lives, we’ve done a good job.
