Extremism Rules

Filed Under: Diet & Health    by: Carole

Hey, how about China executing the head of their version of the FDA? Think that tactic would improve food safety in this country too? You kill millions, we kill you. Kind of extreme. Americans on the other hand, are extreme on the other side. The majority of Americans just sit by and let stuff happen.

My daughter was commenting about someone the other day. She said that he was too much into all this environmental stuff – global warming, sheesh, he even drives a Prius. Then she asked, “does it really make any difference?”

Look at the flooding in China (China is a real hotbed this week, isn’t it?) and tell me if it matters.

But it seems to me that extremism rules.

Either you’re way out there for a cause, or you choose to ignore it.

Either you eat really healthy, or you totally don’t care, or you’re so obsessed that you don’t allow yourself to enjoy anything.

Either you drink like a fish, or you’re a total tee-totaler.

And the stuff these kids are doing to their bodies! I’m astounded at the pictures of freaks and demons she showed me. Oh my gosh.

It’s like everyone has to be overboard in everything they do. What ever happened to moderation? Self Control? Common Sense?

I’m constantly getting comments about the way I eat. Yep, I eat sweets. Sometimes I’ll even eat fried chicken, or French fries. They ask how can I talk about eating healthy when I don’t eat so healthy myself? Yet, my daughter complains that I’m such a freak about healthy eating, and eating fruits and vegetables. Both sides taking an extreme view. The truth is, I’m in the middle. Moderation.

If you eat enough good, you can eat some bad and still be ok.

The whole key to staying healthy and still enjoying life is moderation. Once you get that, you’ll be a lot happier.

Spring Fever at Christmas

Filed Under: Diet & Health    by: Carole

The weather has been incredibly warm for December.
That foot of snow is almost gone.

We spent a lot of time outdoors
today. The dog has passed out me. I love it when
I can actually wear him out. My life challenge!

It’s been so nice to get out and walk. I did the
2 mile dog walk twice today. Once earlier with a
friend, and again tonight so I could enjoy the
Christmas decorations. How magical they are.
Even without snow.

Did you ever notice that your tastes change
with the weather? Last week I was eating chili,
now I want chicken and cheesburgers and big
salads.

So, does that mean if I lived in Florida I would
never want pot roast? That would be terrible.
I love it with tons of carrots, and onions, and
tomatoes. Potatoes are ok, just not one of my
favorites. Georgia says that’s the reason I stay
thin. I think that’s part of it.

Oprah said eat nothing white in her diet book.
I don’t care for mayo, ranch dressing, sour cream,
or cream cheese unless it’s mixed with an equal
amount of sugar. Love cheesecake!

The things I naturally don’t eat are certainly
replaced by the bad things I do eat. I eat way too
much sugar and chocolate. They say that people have
either a sweet or a salty tendancy. It’s not scientific,
but it seems to me that thinner people have the sweet
tendancy.

But a balanced diet can help make up for whatever our
particular weaknesses are. Make sure you are eating
enough of the good stuff – the fruits, veggies, protein,
fiber, etc. Especially make sure to get at least 5
servings of frutis and veggies – and take your vitamins
to make up for your bad habits!

Like I said before, your body is a marvelous machine.
If you just give it the right fuel, it will take good
care of you!

Have a great day!

Restrictions don’t work

Filed Under: Diet and kids    by: Carole

The day after Halloween – All Saints Day.

I have to laugh – parents all over are stressing about their kids
eating too much candy. They’re restricting access, taking candy
away, and teaching bad habits.

First off, many of these parents don’t eat right themselves -
and they don’t get exercise. They’ve tried restrictive diets
and failed. But now they try restriction as a way to teach
their kids to eat right.

Restriction does not work. It only makes you want more.
If you let your kids eat their fill on halloween night, they
will get as much as they want, or more than they want -
and that will be the end of it. They might pick at it for
days after that- but if it’s just sitting there, most kids
will hardly pay attention to it after a couple of days.
I’ve had candy sit for months without being touched.

But, if a kid has been subject to restrictions – they will
eat and eat and eat because they are sure that they
won’t be able to get more. And there the problems
will follow them for the rest of their lives.

We have a natural balancing mechanism in our brains
that if not messed with, will allow us to naturally eat a variety of
foods, both healthy and not so healthy – in balance.

Listen to the messages your own body sends you -
and try not to mess with your kids natural balancing
mechanisms.

Have a healthy day!
