aspirin OK, it’s not a food, but recent findings are important enough to include here. Salicylic acid, now nicknamed vitamin S, in small daily doses helps prevent heart disease and possibly Alzheimer’s. It also blocks prostagladins, which are found in ovarian cancer and lymphoma cancer cells.

Commonly recommended usage is 1 baby aspirin a day. In a recent study it was found that coated aspirin is up to 20% less effective than plain old uncoated aspirin. But it is known to damage the stomach lining.

Pregnant women should not take aspirin as it may contribute to miscarriage. Acetaminophen is the safest painkiller if you are pregnant.
