Another Absurd Medical Statement

Posted under Diet and kids

This study was posted in the US Journal Pediatrics on Monday that showed that medications for five to 19 year-olds have increased at an alarming rate. Between 2002 and 2005 -

Medication for type 2 diabetes increased by 103 percent

Prescriptions for asthma increased 46.5 percent

Prescriptions for attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity leapt 40 percent and were three times more prevalent among boys than girls.

Cholesterol treatments rose 15 percent.

For 5 to 19 year olds!

Now this is a laugh – the article goes on to say this –

“Additional study is needed into the factors influencing these trends, including growth in chronic disease risk factors, greater awareness and greater affinity towards early use of drug therapy in children,” it said.

Give me a break.

Of course the real answer is quit feeding kids diets of fast foods, packaged foods, and 50 gallons of corn syrup a day and give them some real nutrition so they can grow up big and strong. But medical science can’t seem to figure that out? What’s wrong with this picture?

Anyway, you can read the whole article here –

Buzz it up. Somehow people have to get the message that their diet is killing not only them, but their kids too.

Take Care –

keep your kids off drugs

Posted under Diet and kids

I’ve gotten a lot of comments about the fact that I do not buy into all this ADD, ADHD stuff. Well finally, some other people have had enough of the drugging of our kids and are speaking out! I was feeling like a lone squirrel in the forest.

One former school board member in Virginia has caused quite a stir. you can read about it here -  http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=135015&ran=160257&tref=po

Make sure to scroll through some of the comments.

I heard about it through Mike Adams - NewsTarget - and you can read his scathing report here - Renegade School Board Member Educates Parents On ADHD Alternatives

I’ve seen kids who were labeled. They’re treated worse by teachers. They’re treated worse by the other kids. The drugs make them either despondant or mean.

And I’ve seen kids get better when their diet is fixed and they have a physical outlet for all that kid energy. There was one kid in particular that I thought was going to force me to give up my no drug stance. He really was terrible. Once his diet was fixed, the change was nothing short of miraculous. He turned out to be a really sweet kid - a joy to have around. It was truly amazing. This was a kid who was stealing bicycles, had a mouth on him you wouldn’t believe, and was doing things you wouldn’t post in a publicly read blog.

I mean, even my dog has behavior problems when he isn’t fed right and doesn’t get enough exercise. What does that tell you?

If you suspect ADD or ADHD, try a diet of natural foods, no yellow dye, cut way down on sugar, and cut out pop. Feed them plenty of fruits and vegetables. I’ve read that fish is a very helpful food. I’m not a fish eater, so I can’t attest to this. I know, I should eat it. I never claimed to be perfect ;-)
Make sure there is plenty of physical activity to burn off excess kid energy, and that they get enough sleep.

Some cases are linked to food allergies - like peanuts or wheat.

Yes, there are some cases where drug therapy might be needed. but I think it’s about 95% less than what is currently being prescribed. Try diet and exercise changes first and see if that makes a difference.

If you haven’t read High Energy Eating, you should grab a copy. It contains everything a normal person needs to know to keep your family healthy.

You’re being manipulated everyday. Just use some common sense and you’ll be fine.

Teen Health Problems not exclusive to US

Posted under Diet and kids

I just read an interesting article on the health issues facing teens in the UK.

Here in the US, it would seem that we held the world title for poor eating habits, not enough exercise, drinking, drug use, and car accidents. But it seems the UK is right there with us.

Makes me wonder, are these problems more global than we thought?

I’d love to hear from parents around the world on this, wouldn’t you?

I’ve always written from a US perspective, because that’s what I know. I know the fast food empires are spreading worldwide, and the diseases that go with that diet are on the upswing everywhere. But do people around the world eat all these fake packaged foods too? I really don’t know.

I do know that if you’re eating fast foods and/or fake foods, or lab created foods, or franken foods, or whatever you’d like to call them - you are putting your health in grave danger. No halloween puns intended.

Kids, Candy, Health - what to do?

Posted under Diet and kids

It’s the dreaded halloween question - how much candy should you let your kids eat?

This may be a bit controversial, but I say - let them eat all they want. One day, let them indulge. And you might be surpirsed - they just might eat less than you expect.

Teaching kids that they can’t eat what they like is not the right lesson. Teach them that it’s ok to have treats, in moderation.

I know, I just said to let them have all they want. This week, moderation will be one day. Tomorrow, it’s back to a couple of pieces while they do their homework.

See, that’s the problem with all these diets that don’t work. Extremism doesn’t work. I mean, have you ever asked yourself how a vegetarian could be fat? That doesn’t seem to make sense, does it?

The packaged foods you’re feeding them will kill them faster than the candy anyway. So lighten up. Go out with them and have some fun. At least you’ll all get some exercise!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you’re going to be mad at me and leave nasty comments. Will you be mad enough to serve a healthy dinner? Go ahead - Show Me! (you know - “I’ll show her!”)

Just make sure to check the candy before you let them eat it - OK?

Seriously - have some fun. These years go by way too fast.

Happy Halloween!

How to Get Your Kids to Enjoy Healthy Eating

Posted under Diet & Health, Diet and kids

Behavior problems, and life long healthy problems, and even your ability to think clearly all start with what you eat. Getting adults to eat right is hard enough - but how in the world do you get your kids to eat right so they have the best start to a long healthy life? Most people struggle with getting their kids to eat healthy. But it doesn’t have to be a struggle. Here’s what’s worked for me –

1. Eat healthy yourself – they learn from you.

2. Put out lots of food choices and let them taste different foods.

3. Don’t force them to eat something they don’t like. Just ask that they taste new foods. Most kids will accommodate if you start them early. And if they know you won’t force them to eat it if they don’t like it, they’ll be more willing to take the plunge!

4. Remember that kid’s taste change seemingly overnight. Just because they didn’t like it one time doesn’t mean they won’t like it the next time.

5. If you like it, put it out. When they see you enjoying something, they’re more curious.

6. Kids like simpler foods. They’ll eat a hamburger with nothing on it, or a salad with no dressing. You don’t have to be a world class chef.

7. Rather than talking to your kids about how healthy the food is, talk about how great it tastes. They turn off to the notion of healthy eating just the way you do. But if you’re eating it because it tastes really good, you’ll all be a lot happier – and healthier just happens.

Nothing is better than a great example. If you know a lot about foods, and you eat a lot of different foods, kids will naturally learn from you. How can you learn about healthy food?

By the way - These tips also work on adults!

Here’s a quick kid friendly dinner idea -

Creative Wraps Dinner

1 pound chicken or steak cut into strips
Garlic Powder
¼ cup orange juice
1 Tablespoon lime juice
2 teaspoons cider vinegar

Place chicken or steak in a shallow glass baking dish. If cooking both, marinate separately.

Sprinkle with garlic powder. If using steak, also sprinkle fresh ground black pepper to taste.

Sprinkle orange juice, lime juice, and vinegar over meat. Refrigerate overnight.

Drain meat.

Grill quickly only until meat is cooked through and no longer pink. About 10 minutes. Do not over cook.

Put out –

Warmed Tortillas
Refried beans
Guacamole
Salsa
Diced fresh tomato
Diced onion
Shredded lettuce
Shredded cheese
Bacon

Let everyone make their own creations!

Serve with Spanish rice, or beans, or rice and beans, and fresh fruit.

Your High Energy Eating package comes with hundreds of great tasting - healthy - fast and easy recipes. You’ll never be at a loss again!

I love good food, don’t you?

Enjoy!
