I never could figure out why the food pyramid recommends so many servings of whole grains. I mean, every experience I’ve ever had tells me that people who eat a lot of bread are fat. I don’t know of too many people who eat a lot of bread who are thin. As a matter of fact, I can’t think of one. Can you?
OK, so now they tell me, well it’s the people who eat white flour. You should eat whole grains. So everyone flocks to whole grain stuff like a flock of chickens.
I don’t know about you, but it tastes like rope and does bad things to my body. Something is wrong with this picture.
But I keep thinking, maybe it’s just me. My Common-Sense Meter must be out of whack.
Then, all of these people started developing all sorts of inflammation problems due to gluten sensitivity. If you’re having trouble with arthritis, you might want to cut out the whole grain thing. Or irritable bowel, or bloating, or gas.
Maybe I was right after-all? We’re not chickens, so we shouldn’t be eating a chicken’s diet?
So what gives? Why the big recommendation to eat so much grain?
Why didn’t I think of it?
I was reading an excerpt from Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating by M.D. Walter C. Willett & P.J. Skerrett, and they point out that the Food Pyramid is put together with a lot of help from the Department of Agriculture. We grow (and sell) wheat, corn, and dairy.
Of Course! (bopping myself in the head…) If it makes no common-sense, someone is making money.

Mother’s day is right around the corner, and everywhere people are fretting - ‘What should I buy Mom?’
Speaking as a Mom, this should be really easy - but I find it amazing that people know so little about their mothers.
What does your Mom like?
I don’t know.
What’s her favorite perfume?
I don’t know.
What’s her favorite flower?
I don’t know.
What does she really like to do?
I don’t know.
I personally want my daughter to stop trying to buy me clothes - well, except the tank tops last year were really great. But for the most part, we have different tastes. She would also prefer that I stop trying to buy her clothes too.
Every year I make it a point to tell her my favorite things.
A bottle of my favorite cologne, One stem of my favorite flower, or a box of my favorite candy would be greatly appreciated. You can buy me the same thing every year, I don’t care. Those are my favorite things.
And join me for dinner. If it’s going to be a restaurant, let’s not go on mother’s day when everything is a circus. Do that with your mother in law. (Just kidding)
That’s it.
Show her you’ve been listening and you know what her favorite things are - and spend some time with good food and relaxed conversation.
What more could a mom ask for?
Quit making it so hard - on both of you!
Allergy season is in full bloom and it’s already making for a miserable time for anyone suffering from allergies or asthma. But there are things that you can do to make breathing in your home a lot easier
Next - Your most indispensable tool will be the vacuum cleaner. Ideally you want a vacuum with a good filter
Next, take all of the bedding off and put it in the wash.
While it’s washing, vacuum the mattress and the pillows. Spend a lot of time on this step, being sure to do a thorough job. Spray the mattress and pillows with FeBreeze anti allergy.
Now take your brush attachment and vacuum the walls, ceiling fan, window ledges, everything.
Dust
Now thoroughly vacuum the floor.
You will continue to work your way through the house, but you want to get the bedroom of the affected person(s) done first
The first time you do a vacuuming for allergies, you will want to thoroughly vacuum walls, behind furniture, mattresses, pillows, upholstery, window and door screens, and vents, and dusting every crevice- including things like behind the TV and stereo inside the cabinet, the backs of furniture and the ceiling fan blades. Spend a little more time than usual vacuuming upholstery and rugs to let the vacuum get up the majority of the dust and pollen. Most people vacuum too fast and don’t allow the vacuum enough time to pick up.
A quick carpet clean and changing air filters and furnace filters finishes up the initial cleaning job
To maintain, dust ceiling fans, blinds, window treatments, and furniture, vacuum window screens and sills, especially if you leave your windows open
Vacuum all upholstery where pets make themselves comfortable. Thoroughly vacuum rugs and carpeting at least once a week
The vacuuming will take a little longer, but you’ll find you’ll be spending less time dusting, so it evens out.
You also want to change your hand towels everyday, just in case it’s a virus triggering the response.
If you have pets, keep them clean and brushed, and their living areas cleaned. Keep pets out of the bedrooms of affected people.
The things that typically trigger asthma is pretty long-
House dust mites found in carpeting, mattresses, bed linens, toys, upholstered furniture, dampness, poor ventilation, un-vented cooking, humidifiers
Animal-derived allergens from dogs, cats, rodents, and birds;
Mold found in carpeting, walls, and windows, caused by leaks, poor ventilation, water damage, or dampness
Nitrogen oxides produced by space heaters or gas-fueled cooking stove, used with poor ventilation
Wood Smoke from wood stoves or fireplaces, used with poor ventilation, or faulty equipment causing fumes to come back into the room
Fumes from cleaners, aerosols- like hairsprays, perfumes and even air fresheners, pesticides, formaldehyde found in some older household products
Viral respiratory infections - exposure to infected people
Endotoxins from bacteria growing in soil, humidifiers, and other moist places
Cockroach allergen
Tobacco smoke
Excess weight. Yes, overweight people are more prone to asthma
If there was just one thing you could do to minimize allergy or asthma suffering- it’s to become a vacuuming fanatic. The more you get into that bag, the less you have floating around in the air to breathe in. It’s healthier, and you’ll have less dusting to do
A couple of good air cleaners and some houseplants help keep the air-clean too

There are very specific things you want to have in your diet if you suffer from allergies or asthma. These things are important for your overall health anyway, but they are especially important if you have allergies or asthma - and you don’t want to spend the rest of your life on streoids.
Remember that asthma is a chronic inflammation, so you specifically want to target things that help reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system.
It is vitally important to eat lost of fruits and vegetables. And the vegetables need to be colorful. Choose dark green lettuce or spinach for your salads. Iceberg lettuce has about as much nutrition as a glass of water.
Broccoli, fresh green beans, carrots, onions, garlic, tomatoes are all good quick choices.
Canteloupe, watermelon, apples, cherries, strawberries, oranges, cranberry, red or purple grapes, and fresh pineapple are all great choices to eat everyday.
Orange juice, cranberry juice, V8, vegetable juices, and green tea are all great immune strengthening choices.
Strong black coffee is often used to relieve an attack. It opens your airways and is full of nutrients. Because of the caffeine – which is bad for asthma, coffee drinking needs to be kept to one or two cups a day.
Omega 3 fatty acids are important. If you don’t eat fish 2 or 3 times a week, take a supplement. You can find Enteric Coated capsules that don’t leave a fish taste or burp.
Other supplements you should be taking –
A good multi vitamin
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D (must have all 4)
It takes 6 months of taking supplements everyday for your body to fully realize the benefits. Don’t quit in a day or two thinking it doesn’t work. It takes time to build your immune system up.
Some people need an additional B12 supplement. Talk to your doctor.
You want to have a high anti-oxidant diet (including supplements) to give your body a fortress of protection.
Because of changes in the soils used for farming, magnesium deficiency has become more common. Make sure you are getting enough of this very important nutrient.
Because of the skin cancer threats, we are now not getting the vitamin D we need. It is causing all kinds of health problems. Get 15 minutes a day of unprotected sun, but never enough to burn. As far as I’ve heard, the additional amount in the supplement list above should be enough. Vitamin D can be toxic in high doses.
Then, there are the apple cider vinegar, believers. I personally can’t drink it. I’ve tried.
Make sure you’re eating foods rich in antioxidants and giving your body plenty of what it needs.
